About the Event

Hypatia are a group of artists composed of Katarina, Madeline, Rebecca and Zo. Brought together under the pedagogical umbrella of arts education, they have diverse practices which span film, photography, sculpture and drawing. Hypatia was an ancient mathematician, astronomer and teacher. Working with the theory of Stereographic projection, she gave lessons in how to design an astrolabe; used to measure altitude above the horizon of a celestial body and to calculate latitude on land or sea. Interacting like the layered plates and engraved charts of an astrolabe, the collective, working together, offer differing perspectives on themes surrounding art, nature and society. Through exploring material and process biases, they are curious to see how the combined outcome of this kind of group endeavour produces responses to or lessons in navigating contemporary themes through a stereographic lens. As a collective they are interested to see how collaboration will push them to consider the philosophical implications and visual potentialities of living, consuming and making things in 2020: ‘companion species, messmates at table, eating together, whether we know how to eat well or not’ (Donna Haraway).

"Our time at The Margate School has been productive and facilitated the expansion of our personal and collective practices. The opportunity to explore new resources and digital fabrication to expand or technical skillsets. The opening of the darkrooms coincided with the beginning of our residency meaning that the artist interested in photography could develop that part of their practice’s whist at The Margate School. It is a secure space, so we were able to leave our work out to revisit, and develop it. We were -provided with a big area and a large table, the set up was minimal.  On-site there was a plethora of materials we had access to leftover from the construction of the site. Access to the space was great, the ability to work 24 hours if needed in a central location surrounded by local amenities and the beach."
