£100 per day or £70 per day with TMS discount.

This introduction to black and white photography is suited for anyone who wants to explore analogue photography for the first time or for those wishing to brush up on their skills. The course will also serve as the induction giving you continued access to the darkroom at The Margate School.

All materials are included, though we encourage you to use your own camera, either 35mm or medium format up to 6x6. You will leave with one or more final prints to take home with you as well as a thorough understanding of the analogue photographic process from taking photos on film to developing your print.

The course is split over 2 days with photography and film processing on day one and photographic printing on day two. 

You are free to book onto either or both of the days. If you only book onto day 2 you should bring a processed black and white film to print from.

Course Outline:

Day 1

10am-4pm

  • Film formats,cameras and lenses
  • Loading your camera
  • Exposure, aperture and shutter speed and focus
  • Shooting tips and photographic styles
  • Mixing photographic chemistry and developing your negatives

Day 2

10-4pm

  • The enlarger
  • Paper chemistry
  • Printing a test strip and contact print
  • Making your final print
  • Printing techniques -  dodging and burning, contrast and filters.
  • We will also talk a little about your photographs

Dominic Rose is the Analogue photography coordinator at The Margate School with over 25 years of experience shooting on film. His interests are in the interaction between humans and the environment.
