This introduction to black and white photography is suited for anyone who wants to explore analogue photography for the first time or for those wishing to brush up on their skills. Depending on numbers it may be possible to book to attend a single day.
All materials are included (B&W film, photographic paper, chemicals). 35mm cameras can also be provided, though we encourage you to use your own camera (either 35mm or medium format up to 6x6).
You will take home one processed film and one or more B&W prints, as well as a thorough understanding of the analogue photographic process as well as practical experience from taking photos on film to developing your print.
The course is split over 2 days as follows:
Day 1 - 10 am-4 pm
• The basic principles of the photographic process:
- The Light, the Camera, the B&W Film
• Film& film processing:
- The silver halide technology, the chemical process
• The analogue camera:
- The light meter, the lens, basic camera operation, loading the film
• Practice:
- You will be given a B&W film and asked to put into practice what you have been taught
PM
• Processing your film
- The Process: developer, stop, fixer, wash
- Mixing the photographic chemistry
• Demonstration:
- Loading the film processing tank
- Film processing procedure
• Practice:
- You will now load and process the film you shot earlier in the day
Day 2 - 10 am-4 pm
• How to make a Black and White print
- The enlarger
- Processing the paper
- Controlling print density and contrast
AM & PM
• Practice:
- You will be helped to produce black and white prints from your film.
Also, more advanced printing techniques such as burning and dodging, multiple contrast printing, etc. will be introduced as appropriate based on the work being produced.
Arnold Borgerth
Originally from Brazil and working with photography since 1980, Arnold has taught extensively in a number of Universities and has been a lecturer at Goldsmiths since 1996. As well as teaching he works both as an artist and commercial photographer and has exhibited internationally.
