The Margate School (TMS) has developed an exciting international Masters programme called Art, Society, Nature in the discipline of Fine Art worth 120 ECTS credits. The course is approved by our French partners, the renowned art school from Normandy L’École Supérieure d’Art et Design Le Havre-Rouen (ESADHaR) with the support of the Council of Normandy and the French Ministry of Culture.

The Diplôme National Supérieur d’Expression Plastique (DNSEP) accredited and framed Masters programme Art, Society, Nature runs over two years and offers a unique opportunity of mastering the students fine art practice in an international context with a range of established artists and academics.

A majority of the teaching and research will be in Margate yet students will also be required to attend seminars, workshops and present their work at the ESADHaR campuses in France (Rouen and Le Havre). It is a very new and ground-breaking collaboration in the field of art education for both England and France and we are proud for The Margate School to be pioneering this unique Anglo-French collaboration.

‘Art, Society, Nature’ will be delivered in a 2 days per week teaching format (Tuesdays and Wednesdays).

In our ambition to establish The Margate School we acknowledge that education is a privilege. Few can afford the time to reflect, to learn about what might be of value and what less so; to learn and apply skills in a meaningful, socially and environmentally sensitive fashion. For most of us learning takes place in intensive bursts in particular periods of our lives, institutionalised and structured. In a world of hyper-production and hyper-consumption, social inequality, human & environmental disasters, the opportunity to learn should not be removed from life but be part of it.

As Paulo Freire (1921- 1997) pointed out “Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world.”

Here the learner becomes aware at the very moment of learning that they has entered the realm of Verstehen, partaking in the onset of erudition, of enlightenment. In The Margate School we aim to extend that learning potential, we seek to do this in the expanded the field, through art practice, philosophical reflection, scientific exploration, technological enquiry, engagement in today’s environmental challenges and sociological investigations.

Entry requirement

Candidates are required to hold a BA degree in an art related discipline (e.g. fine art, design, media)

Candidates will present a portfolio of their work and are required to attend an interview with TMS/ESADHaR members of staff.

Year 1

In Year 1, students work on their Visual arts project, methodology and production.

This is supported by Studio work, Internship, Individual tutorials and Practice based workshops to include:

Photography
Sculpture
Drawing and Painting
Moving image and Video art

Students begin work on a Memoire supported by a series of lectures and seminars and undertake a History and Philosophy of Art module.

Alongside this students engage in a French Language course.

Students have the opportunity to work with ESADHaR campus in France with 2 weeks of workshops.

Year 2

In Year 2, students continue shaping their personal project and research methodology.

This is supported by Studio work, Individual tutorials and Practice based workshops chosen by the student to best support their project.

Students continue with French Language and History and Philosophy of Art and engage with a new series of lectures.

Students work on their Memoire and engage in contextualisation and spatialisation through seminars, tutorials and group discussion. Students have the opportunity to work with ESADHaR campus in France in 2 weeks of workshops.

In the second semester of Year 2, Students finalise their Memoire and personal project.

Ania Dabrowska

Ania is an award-winning artist working in photography, moving image, installation, text and sound. Her projects are often socially engaged and use participatory and collaborative methodologies. Ania also works as a Senior Lecturer in Photography at The Cass at London Metropolitan University and has previously lectured at the University of Portsmouth, the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art Oxford, Goldsmiths College, University of London, and Notre-Dame University in Beirut, Lebanon. Ania has also been a workshop facilitator and Photography Fine Art Mentor for organisations including: V&A, Free Press Unlimited in Amsterdam, Photo Voice, SPACE- London, World Vision internationally, United Response, and more.

Dr Kristin Fredricksson

Kristin has been making and teaching performance in many contexts and countries since 1994. Her first degree was in Philosophy and History of Art from Cambridge University. She trained with Jacques Lecoq in Paris in the 90s, including the Bauhaus-inspired Laboratory of Movement Study (L.E.M.). She made the multi award-winning show ‘Everything Must Go’ with her company Beady Eye during an MA Practice as Research at Kent University. Her PhD (Royal Holloway) straddled touch, puppetry, Feldenkrais Method and vibrant materialism; she has been a Feldenkrais somatic education practitioner since 2005. She has taught at the universities of Kent, Cambridge, Queen Mary and at Rose Bruford.

Dr Lucy Lyons

Lucy has a PhD in drawing and uses drawing as intervention into different disciplines. She has worked in medical sciences through researching medical museum collections since 2000, investigating how the activity of drawing can lead to better understanding and appreciation of medical phenomena through “slow looking.”

She is a lecturer in drawing research and painting at City & Guilds of London Art School, MA tutor on Open College of the Arts and runs an Art and Anatomy module for medical students at UCL.

Professeur Stéphane Trois Carrés

Stéphane Trois Carrés is a painter, video artist and Professor in charge of the Media department in Upper Normandy College of Art ESADHAR (Ecole Supérieure d’Art et de Design du Havre) as well as lecturer at Media and Technology Master IMAC, at Université Paris Est de Marne La Vallée in Paris.

Professeur Anthony Heywood

Anthony has taught at the RCA sculpture schools as well as Cyprus College of Art and is currently Head of Sculpture at the University for the Creative Arts, Canterbury. His approach to making sculptures draws upon art history as well as contemporary cultural and political events. He often works with upcycled materials, the used and the useless, subverting their functions to play with conventional systems of classification and notions of so-called high and low art to provide fresh perspectives on the things that constitute the world around us.

He is currently exhibiting at the Florence biennale Italy, in march this year exhibited with SBK galleries Amsterdam and has invitation to exhibit at the Venice architecture biennale 2020.

Katarina Dimitrijevic

Katarina Dimitrijevic is an interior architect, design activist, educator and researcher. Katarina is the principal member at KraalD social praxis, committed promoting design as a vehicle for social transformation. Katarina's research approach is a ubiquitous narrative. Urban plastic trash is her study, object of desire and production material. She is engaged in exploring reuse & up: cycle Designedisposal and Designtransposal strategies.

Dr Dan Scott

Dan is a sound artist working across installation, performance, gallery and socially-engaged work. With a background in social anthropology from the LSE, and an MA and PhD in Sound Art from the LCC where he is a member of the Creative Research In Sound Art Practices (CRiSAP) research group, Dan has tutored on sound art in higher educational institutions for the last 10 years, including the University of the Arts, UCA, University of Kent and the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

Dan has developed and presented work in many contexts and institutions, including: The inaugural commission Players that launched Tate Exchange in collaboration with choreographer Aya Kobayashi; Public art projects such as boat-house-theatre, made in collaboration with Tom Adams, The Sonic Trails programme across Tate Britain and Tate Modern, as well as live performances including shows live at at Cafe Oto, De La Ware Pavilion, Turner Contemporary, Folkestone Triennial, Whitstable Biennale and on radio at Resonance FM and Radio Margate. Solo exhibitions include Yesterday at Harewood House in Yorkshire and Liberation Through Hearing, designed by Gilbert Scott. Dan’s collaborative work with other artists include projects such as Barbara Walker's Place, Space, Who at Turner Contemporary, Conference (after attar), with Caroline Bergvald for Whitstable Bienniale. He has worked as Sound Designer for theatre shows such as Hanna and Hannah in Dreamland, Return of the Unknown for Marlowe Theatre, and the Halmletmachine at the Bloomsbury Festival. Dan has worked locally with Open School East, Resort Studios, CRATE, LIMBO.

Associate Tutors

Dr Gill Wilson

Gill started as a graphic designer running a design business for over 20 years before joining education. She taught in a specialist art and design environment for many years. She was involved in the politics of widening participation in art education and worked as a consultant during the last Labour government. She has written Student and Teaching Guides to support arts qualifications. Gill has a Doctorate in Education and led the Research Units for a Master of Arts PGC in Creative Arts Education until recently, when she decided to devote more time to her own practice.

Raphael Sieraczek

Classically trained pianist, theatre director and researcher in creativity. Over 10 years of experience in education and performance. Founder and director of the London-based Imagine a Spectacle theatre and Module Leader of the ‘Theatre of Discovery’ Interdisciplinary Award at King’s College London (KCL). Raphael is a guest lecturer and a PhD candidate in the field of learning and creativity at KCL and leads on collaborative research projects questioning the divide between art and science. Founding member of The Margate School and former Director for Art & Education.

Mick Williamson

Mick was Senior Lecturer in Charge of Photography at The Cass (Sir John Cass School of Art, Architecture and Design, London Metropolitan University) for a number of years and has also taught in California and South Australia.

His photography has been exhibited in solo shows and in group shows nationwide and internationally and he has selected and curated numerous exhibitions in the UK

Alongside his other work, his long term, on-going project is "The Photo-Diaries of Mick Williamson".

Sebastian Edge

Sebastian is an artist primarily working with the wet collodion process. In 2011 Sebastian made imagery for Radiohead’s album “The King of Limbs”. Later that year he began constructing The North London Darkroom, which is shared with other photographers and printmakers. He regularly works on projects in his distinctive photographic style.

Phil Evans

Phil has worked for over 20 years as a Technical Tutor at University for the Creative Arts Canterbury as well as Visiting Lecturer within the School of Architecture, with extensive technical training covering Foundry Bronze/Cast Iron, Welding, Wood Machine Shop and Kiln work. Phil studied at University of the Arts, London, London College of Fashion and Bath Academy of Arts and exhibited at Chatham Dockyards, Herbert Read Gallery, The Canterbury Art Fair, British Museum, Metropole Gallery, Oxford Art Week and ICA Galleries London. Phil was a founding member of ‘Sculpture in Beirut’, a project working with refugees and homeless children in the centre of Beirut creating and exhibiting sculptures and installations from found objects within the city.
