Have you ditched digital? The Margate School of Art Darkroom has everything you need for analogue process and print. 

Open to the public 5 days a week.

Overview

We have two fully equipped darkrooms with enlargers set up for black and white film development and photographic printing.

 

Darkroom facilities are available for hire on a solo-use basis and for groups of up to 5 people.

Tuition is also available on a 1:1 basis or on our weekend workshops and our Tuesday evening sessions.

We supply photographic chemicals as well as Ilford film and paper

  • ​5 enlargers for 35mm and 120 film
     

  • Sink and trays for up to 16x12 inch prints (bigger prints can be accommodated)
     

  • Film changing bags, Paterson tanks and spirals
     

  • Ilford film and paper and chemicals for sale
     

  • Imacon 848 film scanner for 6x6 and 6x7 negatives
     

  • Epson Flatbed film scanner for film and prints
     

  • Large format facilities are available by special request
     

  • Cameras and lighting available to studioholders/fellows and students.

Bookings

Our basic darkroom booking is unsupervised. To use the darkroom you will need to have had previous experience in a darkroom and had a health and safety induction. The induction can be arranged on your first visit and is included in your initial hire price. It takes about 30 minutes. 

 

If you are new to analogue photography, please contact us for 1:1 tuition or look out for one of our workshops. 1:1 rates are £100 for a half day including paper and chemicals.

The darkroom is available to book 5 days a week. Please enquire for weekend use or group bookings.

 

  • Morning session 10am - 1:30pm

  • Afternoon session 1:30pm - 5pm
