Overview
The course proceeds from tuning into images—perhaps drawn from dreams or memories—toward the practical application of sequencing and montage. Students will be guided by a blend of group discussions, practical demonstrations, in-class exercises, and one-to-one support to develop a cohesive visual narrative.
Using and expanding the parameter of the format of ten pages plus cover, the objective of the course is to create a prototype experimental picture book, for public presentation at TMS.
This course is open to anyone establishing a personal project, graphic novel, or artist book.
By the end of the course, students will have:

Increased their skills and confidence in narrative drawing, visual layout and montage techniques for storytelling on paper

Developed a complete project and a basis for further development, discussed in group and individually with tutor

Course tutor: Sława Harasymowicz is an award winning practising artist currently based in East Kent. Following her MA in Communication Art and Design from The Royal College of Art in 2006, she developed a multidisciplinary project investigating psychoanalysis through a graphic novel and installation at The Freud Museum London. With a recent PhD from Central St Martins, her work continues to explore political and poetic possibilities of artist’s book and exhibition.
