The two-day workshop is an opportunity to learn about the sustainable practice and methodologies that Jess and Melanie have used in the works created for Across Landscapes - giving a unique insight into their research, processes and methods of collaboration. The focus will be on engaging with the local seaside environment of Margate as both a site of inspiration and resource.

Over the weekend, you will be introduced to Melanie and Jess’s research methods and practices with a brief introduction and artist talk, this will be followed by an evening walk and foraging session on Margate We will learn about the ethics of foraging, the histories and folkloric traditions of local plants and how to identify the natural compound that is used in sustainable analogue processing.

Participants will then be introduced to how to make you own home brewed developer from locally collected ingredients followed by the sustainable methodologies for processing and developing 35mm/120mm analogue film.

At the end of the workshop, you would have developed your own negatives in a local home brewed sustainable developer made from foraged ingredients from Margate seaside.

The weekend will require you to be guided by what the environment will offer, encouraging us to engage with the unique seaside ecology in a conscious and ethical way.  We hope that this workshop will encourage you to embrace the natural pace and ways of working that are part of developing more sustainable practices as artists working in an ecological crisis.

This workshop is aimed for photographers of all levels who are wanting to gain a deeper understanding of analogue photographic practices that are embedded in sustainable processes and methodologies. The workshop will be taking place at Margate School, where we will have access to the darkroom processing facilities.
