We are currently running two post-graduate academic programmes, one in fine art and one in graphic design. TMS supports 29 studio spaces, housing a vibrant mix of creative professionals, small businesses and students as well as a developing Fabrication Laboratory offering technical facilities, including CAD/CAM prototyping facilities, woodwork, screenprinting, laser cutting and 3D printing. The Technical Coordinator will be integral to the wider TMS team and play an active role within it, whilst in particular working with the Creative Exchange Coordinator. The technical coordinator will need to bring a range of technical skills, including strong IT skills and an ability to learn new technical software quickly (CAD/CAM, 3D modelling, audio), an understanding of AV requirements to meet briefs (live streaming, projections and audio for event/talks, basic understanding of camera equipment to capture events), basic building skills, both for infrastructural repairs and for creative projects, be hands-on, highly organised and demonstrate a willingness to learn whilst undertaking technical instructions to students, staff and studio holders. The candidate will have a client orientated and solution orientated approach to the work and contribute actively and imaginatively to developing the School’s technical environment.

The role will primarily be split between, supporting students with their work from a technical perspective and the ongoing maintenance of the building. We operate out of the former Woolworths building that had stood empty since 2008 and therefore brings its own challenges and the whole team is on hand to deal with those periodically. We are also part of the MargateDigital initiative that is resulting in the conversion of the former M&S building in Margate’s High Street into a digital education facility run by the EKC Group. The Technical Coordinator and Creative Exchange Coordinator will be contributing to this development once the initiative moves into the next stage. The technical coordinator will be on a freelance contract and be part of the TMS team, and contribute to the general work of the School participating in weekly team meetings. Working days/Salary

Application deadline: 01.12.21 Interviews: 03.12.21 About The Margate School The Margate School is a coming together of minds and passions, many years of observation and study of the world we live in and dialogues with our peers and friends. Inspired by thinkers and makers in the arts, design, the social and natural sciences, humanities and philosophy. The Margate School seeks to create exciting and unique learning experiences in and around Margate, a fascinating and contrasting social, cultural and natural setting to bring together international and local students, academics, artists, philosophers, scientists as well as the wider community. TMS is inspired also by the debate around pioneering and so-called ‘alternative school’ concepts, such as Bauhaus, Black Mountain College, the Summerhill School etc. “Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world” Paulo Freire (1921- 1997).

Our Approach

The Margate School is about people and everyday life, it is a mirror to us, a space where we can critically and creatively reflect upon our lives, our actions, values and relationships to others and the world around us. The objective of Art, Society, Nature is to strengthen students’ academic study, encourage independent thinking and practice and to support them in the development of a unique and personal approach in the field of contemporary creative and intellectual practice. To do this, students must refine their technical, practical and theoretical skills and knowledge they acquired during their previous undergraduate studies.
