About the Event

6 week course: Thursday 22 February to Thursday 28 March 2024

Weekly on Thursday, 10am to 4pm

The Visual Communication Design : Design Society Nature course enables students to develop their design knowledge and technical skills while also developing a critical and socially engaged design practice, where people and the planet come first.

We have introduced the opportunity to study modules as short courses, the first of these is Typography.

In the 6-week Typography module you will learn about the classification and character of type. You'll explore the dazzle and sparkle of sea side typographic here in Margate with design historian and Tutor Dr Paul Rennie, who leads the course alongside graphic designer and communications consultant Rachel Kirk. You'll explore the evolution of type production from wood-block printing to the Apple Mac. You'll get creative in a letter-press workshop, experimenting with composition, colour and wood type. You will design your own typeface and we'll be joined by typographer and designer Graham Wood, founding member of the pioneering design collective Tomato, as a guest lecturer.

Visual Communication Design : Design Society Nature is a one-year, part-time programme exploring the fundamental principles of visual communication. Design Society Nature is unique in its collaborative and hands-on approach to design education. The course aims to instil independent thinking and creative confidence by developing critically minded designers who are socially and environmentally engaged.

If you would like to visit TMS and discuss the course with our Academic Co-ordinator prior to booking, please get in touch by email admissions@themargateschool.com

The cost for the module is £691, which includes induction to facilities and 3 months TMS Fellowship on completion of the module.
