SIGHTLINES is the end-of-year showcase from this year’s Visual Communication students at The Margate School. The show examines the seaside as a place for pleasure and therapy, through light, colour and perspective.
Over a year-long course with modules in Visual Language, Typography and Image, the students have explored the interplay between society and nature at the seaside, through the lens of design.
This showcase is the culmination of that process, encompassing flat colour prints, moving image display, installations and unique twists on classic seaside motifs.
SIGHTLINES forms part of this year’s Margate Festival of Design. Head over to www.themargatefestivalofdesign.com to view the full programme of events and workshops.
We would like to thank Guest House No 42. our new neighbour on the High Street, for sponsoring this show.

With a background in maths and education I moved into design in order to develop this visually through a creative lens.
Working at The Margate School has allowed me to enhance my practice through experiment and collaboration and I am excited to build upon this personally and professionally. My works on display form an engaging branding and advertising campaign for my digital printing service.
Impassioned by illustration, urban plein-air sketching and digital design, I have ambitions to find the focal point of these technical and creative interests.

I get a sense of space in Thanet that I’ve never found elsewhere, and I love how the wide-open skies can light everything up - not just the beach and the sea, but the concrete as well.
I’m fascinated by the idea of seeing my environment critically - photographic research really helps me break complex things (such as buildings and landscapes) down into simple units of light and colour, which I then map onto a two-dimensional surface.

I joined The Margate School with a background in fine art and an interest in visual communication. The focus on the seaside afforded by the course and its location has led me to the exploration of exciting and dramatic optical effects in design, as well as the different styles of the seaside.
My practice has developed by experimenting with these possibilities across different scales and contexts. I have explored how dazzle camouflage can be combined with classic seaside motifs to create a dynamic seaside visual language, with outcomes as flat colour prints, moving image and 3D design.
